Joey, the founder of Sun Studio Tan, started his tanning industry venture in 2001 at City Tan, the initial salon where he worked. Situated in Studio City, California, City Tan catered to affluent locals and celebrities. This early experience laid the groundwork for Joey's successful career in the tanning sector, providing him with valuable insights and skills.
2003
New York City
In 2003, Joey came back to New York City to pursue a job opportunity in Manhattan. Managing Portofino Sun in the East Village proved to be a fulfilling experience, providing access to a varied clientele, including celebrities. This position showcased his management abilities and strengthened his ties to the entertainment sector.
2005
Powell, Ohio
With ideas of a new business, Joey moved home to Ohio. He decided to bring a little extra sunshine to town. Enter Sun of a Beach, a boutique tanning salon in the heart of Powell, offering four levels of UV tanning and a high-pressure UVA bed.
2007
Powell, Ohio
The locals caught on quickly, and Sun of a Beach became the go-to tanning spot for everyone from high schoolers to adults. Top-notch services and a prime location gave the salon its own little spot of permanent sunshine in the local tanning scene.
2008
Los Angeles, California
After deciding to return to Los Angeles, where his journey in the tanning industry began, Joey relocated with his partner and their two dogs, Gizmo and Wilur. He secured a position at the renowned Sunset Tan, known for its appearance on E!'s hit TV show.
2009
Los Angeles, California
While working at Sunset Tan, Joey met the owner of a competing salon, Hollywood Tans. He was offered the chance to collaborate and help expand the business, aiming to make it the top indoor tanning option on the west coast.
2013
Los Angeles, California
After two years of dedicated effort and expansion to a second location, the business was rebranded as Sun Studio LA. The new name reflected its growing presence and reinforced a commitment to top-tier service and excellence.
2016
Columbus, Ohio
In 2016, the saying “there's no place like home” took on new meaning when Joey returned to Ohio and launched Airbrush Tans OH. The introduction of the Hollywood sunless tan quickly gained traction, and the business began to grow rapidly.
